There may not have been fans turned out in sequins, white gloves and hi-water pants but fans, none the less, went to Hollywood 10 Theater to see Michael Jackson's last performance.
"This Is It" debuted in St. Joseph, and around the world, Tuesday night. The St. Joseph showing was at 11 p.m.
Rhonda Rissler got out of bed to see the hyped-up movie.
The St. Joseph woman drove to the local theater at midnight on Sept. 27, when the tickets officially went on sale.
Seeing the lines before other big premiers, she wanted to ensure that she and her son, David, had a good seat. They arrived at the theater an hour early on Tuesday night.
"I couldn't believe it," she said. "I bet there was barely 15 people that showed up at the theater."
Ms. Rissler isn't sure why more fans didn't come to the movie but wonders if they just didn't know it was playing. The theater's manager told her he still had about 200 tickets available. The movie is still showing at Hollywood 10 Theaters.
"It was awesome," said Ms Rissler said. "He looked so healthy and he moved like he'd always moved."
Ms. Rissler said he easily kept up with the 20-year-old backup dancers.
The movie, which premiered in 99 countries, showed footage of Mr. Jackson's last tour before his death.
It was a little bit like a documentary and took clips from several different rehearsals to make a whole song. "This Is It" brought to life all the behind-the-scenes action of a legendary concert.
"All the interviews were before he died," Ms. Rissler said. "But it wasn't sad at all."
She said she plans to see the movie again on Saturday in Kansas City.
During the movie, Ms. Rissler said there was at least one song she'd never heard before.
"I can't wait until the CD of his music comes out," she said. "It's going to be awesome music."
Mr. Jackson died June 25 at age 50.
