We recommend for Oct. 23, 2009

Each week, members of the Lifestyles staff share something we like. Maybe you'll like it, too.

Sylvia Anderson, food/home and garden reporter: If you're partying or at an event in downtown Kansas City around the Power and Light District and looking for an economical place to eat, try Consentino's Market at 10 E. 13th St. Yes, it's a grocery store, but they have a huge selection of ready to eat foods including pastas and sandwiches they make up fresh for you. It's something like the setup at Hy-Vee in St. Joseph with a dining area, only a little more upscale/restaurant looking in appearance, fewer grocery items and many more foods that are ready to eat. They are open until 10 p.m.

Tamara Clymer, family reporter: There is something pretty darn magical about going out to a pumpkin patch and letting your kids pick their own orange gourd. Its kind of like cutting down your own Christmas tree - it has a way of getting you in the holiday spirit. The air is crisp, the leaves are turning and there's usually a piping hot cup of cider waiting for you back at the orchard's shop.

Shea Conner, entertainment reporter: I live near the Shoppes at North Village, so my one-stop grocery store is the North Belt Wal-Mart. And I've seen the occasionally disturbing cross-section of people who walk into the store at 2 a.m. Therefore, I am recommending the Web site www.peopleofwalmart.com. The whole site is dedicated to the 24-hour superstore's horridly dressed shoppers. Even their rides look bad (one Toyota Corolla had troll dolls glued all over it). I still don't know whether I should laugh at the site's photos or look at them as evidence to America's eventual demise.

Jess DeHaven, Lifestyles editor: I'm a reader, and something really cool came across my desk the other day. It's "The Bibliophile's Devotional" by Hallie Ephron, and it contains one-pages snippets of 365 classic books, modern and from the past. It's set up to read one page a day, starting Jan. 1. Flipping through I saw several old friends and some titles that I've always thought about picking up. It looks like a great way to find some new reading material.

Blake Hannon, entertainment reporter: Guess what? I'm going to recommend yet ANOTHER reality show -- and this one will knock you out. I've been hooked on "The Ultimate Fighter" on Spike since it first aired. Now, the show that lets mixed martial artists battle for a contract with the UFC at 9 p.m. Central every Wednesday, is devoting an entire season to heavyweights. But the main reason to watch is for the mixture of colorful personalities, including famed street fighter Kimbo Slice and fighters-turned-coaches Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, whose hatred for one another leads to verbal sparring that is sometimes more entertaining than the actual fights.

Erin Wisdom, health reporter: With cold and flu season upon us, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping to make it through to spring without much sickness. I've also been reading quite a bit about the benefits of vitamin D in boosting immunity. People tend to be more deficient in vitamin D in the winter since they're spending less time in the sun, but there are other ways to get it, including through certain foods - like fatty fish and egg yolks - and dietary supplements.
