We recommend for Nov. 20, 2009

Each week, members of the Lifestyles staff share something we like. Maybe you'll like it, too.

Sylvia Anderson, food/home and garden reporter: I am not a huge Stephen King fan, but I really like his book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. It's an autobiography of sorts, with the first half devoted to his influences growing up and the second half discussing the art of writing. His book is surprisingly funny, personal and overall a very easy read. The first section of the book is an autobiography mainly concerning King's early exposure to fiction and his childhood attempts at writing. He describes his early attempts to get published, his success with his first novel Carrie, and his subsequent development as an extremely popular author. King also discusses his problems with drugs and alcohol. The second section is practical advice on writing, from tips on grammar to ideas about developing plot and character. King describes it as a guide for how "a competent writer can become a good one." He stresses his beliefs that a writer should edit out unnecessary details and avoid the use of unnecessary adverbs.

Tamara Clymer, family reporter: What ever did we do before the car companies came up with heated leather seats? I recently discovered just how lovely they were after our snowstorm earlier this week. I've been tempted to turn them on since we bought our new SUV a couple of months ago, but have resisted the temptation. Now I wish I would have given in sooner. It was heavenly to sit on a nice warm seat instead of the usual bum-numbing cold one. Now all I need is a heated steering wheel.

Shea Conner, entertainment reporter: With just one week until the biggest shopping day of the year, I found an awesome Web site that lists and categorizes every item found in every major Black Friday ad. The Web site is www.blackfriday.info and it will even keep and organize your holiday wish list. It can also send you updates when new deals are leaked. If you're making the a.m. venture next Friday, I highly suggest you check this site first.

Jess DeHaven, Lifestyles editor: Yeah, it's cold. There aren't many upsides to that, but the Signature Hot Chocolate at Starbucks may be one. It's actually ruined hot chocolate at other places for me. This stuff is so rich, it's like drinking a chocolate bar. Yummy!

Blake Hannon, entertainment reporter: If you are watching what you eat at home, in the drive-thru or at a sit-down restaurant, you probably can't live without the Eat This, Not That Web site at www.eatthis.menshealth.com. It tells you the best and worst of everything for you from a health standpoint, whether it's cereal, beer, whole foods items, beverages, fast food or dessert. And if you have cravings for "forbidden" foods, Eat This, Not That pretty much does what its title indicates, letting you know what to eat if you want to knock out a few calories, fat or sodium but still settle your cravings.

Erin Wisdom, health/religion reporter: I've heard good things about Piggy Paint, a nail polish line created by a mom who didn't want to expose her daughters to the chemicals in regular polish. It's made from natural ingredients, and the company also offers a nail-poish remover made from natural ingredients. The line is marketed specifically for kids, but I think it might appeal to adults, too - even if they aren't as likely as little girls to want to wear some of the more outrageous colors. To learn more or order the polish, go to www.piggypaint.com.
