The Kansas City T-Bones host the third annual Redneck Weekend
Come on, you can admit it: You’re a redneck, aren’t you? If not, you probably are related to one or know someone who is. Let’s be real, we’re from the Midwest, Redneck Country.
There’s no need to be ashamed of your redneck ways; they should be celebrated. That’s what the Kansas City T-Bones think, anyway. The independent minor league team is hosting its third annual Redneck Weekend this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, complete with mullets, hunting gear and keg rolling.
“We thought that it’d be fitting,” says director of promotions Colin Aldrich, “and it’s just a good way to have a good time and do something fun for the fans and promote that everybody be a redneck.”
General manager Rick Muntean says Redneck Weekend has been a success from the very beginning.
“It was better than we could have ever hoped for,” he says. “We had some of our biggest nights at the gate that year.”
Redneck Weekend kicks off Friday with Mullet Night. Anyone who wears a mullet, whether it be real or a wig, gets half off Fort Hays State bleacher or berm seats.
A “mulletin board” displays Polaroid pictures of the mullet-wearers throughout the weekend.
In between innings there are different games, like the hubcap toss, keg rolls, road-kill pickup, the watermelon crawl and corn-shucking contests.
On Saturday is the Redneck Wine and Cheese Festival. For a small donation, fans are treated to boxed wine, spray cheese and crackers and Twinkies.
Sunday caps off the Redneck Weekend with the Redneck Olympics. Three teams of two try to beat each other in events like the tire-change competition, the decoy toss or a hot dog eating contest.
Even the players get in on the redneck action, wearing special jerseys on Saturdays. The first year it was hunting-themed jerseys, with bright orange sleeves and camouflage bodies. Last year it was plaid jerseys with the sleeves cut off.
“The crowd went absolutely berserk (when they saw the jerseys),” Mr. Muntean says. “They were screaming and laughing.”
And seeing the crowd so amped up helps pump up the players.
“It helps the players relax,” says Tommy Thrall, director of media relations, “and they get a kick out of it, too,”
The players aren’t the only ones who dress up for the event. Fans get into it, sporting costumes throughout the weekend.
“We get people of all sort. We get people breaking out the cut-off shorts, the cut off shirts,” says Mr. Aldrich. “A lot of people cut their hair into mullets just for the weekend. People come in overalls. People really seem to get into this one.”
Must be all that redneck pride.
